The captain told me the boat would not return. I had to pull in the two ropes (hawsers). They were exact length weight and I had to pull them and tie them around the moorings at the pier. I pulled and pulled and neatly wrapped them round the post. When I turned around I had pulled the post in the water in as well. The captain put a new post in the water for the next boat.
