Owen SterlingA tongue is the instrument of speech and the vessel for every sworn word. During the night, the brain processes the integrity of what is communicated and how truth is handled in the waking hours. This symbol serves to examine the relationship between internal thought and external declaration.
The dream points to the mechanics of how a person holds their convictions. When the mind focuses on this instrument, it is often rehearsing the consequences of what has been said or what remains unsaid. Uncertainty about whether one’s words are true or how they land on others arises from this sorting. The dreamer finds that the capacity for clarity is a fundamental part of their current mental organization.
The dream of cutting off a tongue indicates a forced removal of the ability to express a truth. This loss of agency suggests that the dreamer is experiencing a situation where their voice is being suppressed by external circumstances.
When the dream involves a swollen tongue, the meaning shifts toward an inability to articulate clearly due to an internal or external pressure. This state suggests that the process of communication is being hindered by an excess of something that makes the simple act of speaking difficult.
A dream of a black tongue or a hairy tongue signifies a corruption or a thickening of the communicative faculty. These qualities suggest that the speech being processed is no longer clean or direct, as the brain works through the discomfort of words that have become heavy or obscured.
